Gig work tax FAQ
Do gig apps withhold taxes?
None of them: DoorDash, Uber, Lyft, Amazon Flex, and Spark pay you gross as a 1099 contractor. You owe the 15.3% SE tax plus federal and state income tax yourself, normally through quarterly payments.
How much gig income do I have to report?
All net profit of $400 or more owes SE tax and must be reported — even if the app never sends you a form. In 2026 the 1099-NEC threshold rose to $2,000 (OBBBA), so many drivers will get no paper and still owe.
Which app is best for taxes?
The tax rules are identical — what differs is how many miles each generates. At $0.725/mile (2026 IRS rate), mile-heavy apps (suburban delivery) produce bigger deductions than dense-area ones. Compare your own case in each app's calculator.
