Citable facts — Take-Home Index 2026
Every figure below is for a $100,000 gross salary, single filer, no dependents, tax year 2026, unless the row says otherwise. All 50 states are in the download.
$9,229
a year — the gap in take-home pay between the 9 states with no income tax and Hawaii, the lowest of the 50. That's $769 a month, 9.2% of the salary.
$79,180
is the take-home shared by all 9 states with no state income tax (AK, FL, NV, NH, SD, TN, TX, WA, WY), which tie for first place.
$69,951
is Hawaii's take-home, the lowest of the 50 states.
$115,550
is the salary a worker in Hawaii needs to take home what $100,000 does in Texas — a raise of $15,550 just to break even after tax.
#50 of 50
is where New York City would rank among the states: its 3.876% local wage tax removes a further $3,252 a year on top of state tax, putting it dead last.
$74,985
is the national median take-home; the average across the 41 states that do tax wages is $74,299.
$3,729 → $14,729
is how the state-to-state gap scales with income: $3,729 at a $50,000 salary, $14,729 at $150,000. The higher the salary, the more the state matters.
These are after-tax figures, not cost-of-living adjusted: the equivalent-salary number is what it takes to keep the same amount after tax, not to buy the same basket of goods.

Every figure comes from our own engine under one uniform profile, so the 50 states are comparable to each other. State tax is modeled as each state's top marginal rate on income above the federal standard deduction — a comparison index, not an individual tax bill, so states with genuinely progressive brackets pay somewhat less than shown.
