The tiebreaker is rarely the price sheet; it's whether your books already live in QuickBooks Online.
If they do, QuickBooks Payroll posts payroll runs straight into your P&L with zero mapping, and your accountant sees everything in one login. If they don't, Gusto is the more polished standalone: cleaner onboarding, benefits administration on every tier, and contractor filings included.

The case for QuickBooks Payroll
One system. Payroll expenses, liabilities and tax payments post natively into QuickBooks Online — no sync connector to break, no month-end reconciliation between systems. Same-day direct deposit arrives at the Premium tier ($88 + $15), and Elite adds tax-penalty protection: if Intuit's filing is wrong, they cover penalties up to $25,000.
The July 2026 price increase narrowed its old advantage, and Core still gates HR tools and time tracking behind Premium. But for a QBO shop with an accountant who lives in Intuit's ecosystem, the native fit usually beats a marginally cheaper external tool.
The case for Gusto
Standalone polish. Gusto's onboarding, employee self-service and benefits enrollment are consistently rated the smoothest in the segment, and every plan includes automatic federal, state and local filings plus 1099 contractor payments. Multi-state payroll doesn't require the top tier.
It also integrates with QuickBooks Online anyway — the sync is one-way and occasionally needs re-mapping, but for teams that want the better payroll UX and are willing to tolerate an integration, it works. If you use Xero or anything other than QBO, Gusto is the clear pick.
